HEALTH QUALITY ONTARIO RELEASES THREE NEW QUALITY STANDARDS THAT ADDRESS OPIOID PRESCRIBING, OPIOID USE DISORDER
In recent years, Ontario has seen a dramatic rise in the rate of opioid prescribing along with increases in opioid-related deaths, hospitalizations, and emergency department visits. There has also been a growth in the rates of opioid use disorder. The patterns for these issues varies dramatically across the province showing a need for quality standards in this area.
In response, Health Quality Ontario has developed three quality standards, that outline for clinicians and patients what high-quality care looks like when:
These quality standards also explain why it is important for prescribers to not suddenly discontinue prescription opioids.
Quality standards are developed in collaboration with patients with lived experience, physicians, nurses caregivers and organizations across the province and are based on the best available evidence.
