The Central East LHIN has adopted a project management philosophy and processes as Planning Partners (collaboratives, networks, task groups, project teams) and Health Service Providers develop and implement priority projects designed to enhance and strengthen health care delivery in the Central East region.  

According to the Project Management Institute (PMI®), project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to meet project requirements. This invariably involves balancing competing demands among:

  • Scope, time, cost, risk, and quality
  • Stakeholders with differing needs and expectations
  • Identified requirements (needs) and unidentified requirements (expectations)

By applying sound project management practices, processes and techniques, the likelihood of the project being completed on time, within the defined budget and scope, and to an acceptable level of quality will increase.

Access to the Secure Project Management Office Website 

The Central East Local Health Integration Network has created a secure Project Management Office website to support Central East LHIN project teams. The website has a variety of guides, templates, tools and advice to support project managers and teams. However, due to the proprietary nature of some of the resources on the website access is not available to the general public and is restricted to employees of health service providers and planning partners.

Project Management Training Opportunities

One of the important services offered by the Central East LHIN PMO is the coordination of project management training for health service provider employees and planning partner teams. Training is a key strategy to improve project management capacity throughout the Central East LHIN.

Project Management is seen as a key method for organizing and completing work in a complex healthcare environment characterized by multiple organizations learning to collaborate around matters that are subject to almost continual change. The following are the major reasons why the Central East LHIN and health service providers are conducting project management training.

  • Confidence
    • Provides new project participants with good openings for raising project issues in a more effective way and influencing their resolution
    • Enhances the ability and resolve of experienced PMs to recognize and address project risk factors at an earlier stage
  • Productivity 
    • Allows new project participants to play a more proactive role by sharing the load on larger projects and managing smaller ones
    • Enables experienced project managers to be able to coach or teach others and further leverage their experience
  • Documentation
    • Introduces the need for fundamental documentation to new project participants
    • Provides a forum for experienced project managers to discuss how best to fine-tune existing standards and practices, in a spirit of continuous improvement, to increase their value
  • Communication
    • Introduces new project participants to the project lifecycle as a roadmap for the types of information to be communicated at each phase
    • Provides experienced project managers with tools to plan and execute timely communications of interest to project stakeholders
  • Collaboration
    • Provides a common language for all project participants to collaborate more effectively
    • Enables collaboration and common reporting for LHIN-wide and province-wide initiatives

Introduction to Project Management

To date the PMO has successfully offered Introduction to Project Management workshops, through a 3rd party vendor, intended for anyone in a health service provider organization who has a role on a project team and is responsible for successfully completing project activities i.e. project sponsors, project managers and project team members.

This workshop provides an overview of the project management process and concepts, and provides participants with the skills needed to define, plan and implement projects.

On workshop completion, participants will be able to:

  • Assess the potential impact of a project on the organization
  • Build the commitment of stakeholders to the project
  • Plan for the successful functioning of the team
  • Understand the competencies of a project manager
  • Establish project scope and objectives
  • Identify project tasks and activities
  • Confirm resources, responsibility and timing
  • Develop a project plan that prepares for contingencies
  • Monitor the project and make the necessary modifications
  • Evaluate and close-out the project

Critical Thinking Skills for Project Teams 

This new 2-day course is complementary to the “Introduction to Project Management” workshop referenced above. This workshop is intended for project managers, sponsors and team-members who want to resolve project related issues more effectively. Ideally participants will have some project experience and understand the project management methodology and terminology that is referenced frequently in the content.

The workshop includes establishing a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality profile for each participant and how each personality type indicates preferences on each of the following personality characteristics

  • The way you focus your attention;
  • The way you take in information;
  • The way you make decisions;
  • How you deal with the outer world.

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Understand better how they and others think;
  • Apply a powerful four-step thinking process to effectively clarify and resolve a wide variety of project issues;
  • Increase team and stakeholder involvement in resolving project issues and gain commitment to get projects back on track;
  • Communicate with and influence project sponsors and stakeholders with evidence-based recommendations.

This workshop has been approved by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and qualifies for 15 professional development units (PDUs).
