Hospital Information System (HIS) Vision
Across the province, LHINs are working with health service providers on a number of integration initiatives that will lead to a more sustainable, accessible health care system. In some LHINs, this includes looking at back office integrations such as shared information technology systems that support the work of front line health service providers working in acute and community based settings. By working in partnership, health care organizations can identify integration opportunities related to the collection, analysis and dissemination of health information that will improve patient access, lead to better population health and ensure value for money.
On February 26, 2014, the Central East LHIN Board of Directors passed a motion to invite the hospital leadership to participate in a facilitated integration planning process to develop a regional Hospital Information Systems (HIS) Vision. Given the significant investment in hospital IT being planned across the LHIN, the Central East LHIN Board wanted to ensure that whatever investments are made are sustainable and support the LHIN’s mission to lead the creation of an integrated sustainable health care system that ensures better health, better care, better value for money.
Consequently the LHIN’s nine acute care hospitals are now involved in a HIS Vision facilitated integration to identify the best course of action for the ongoing delivery of hospital health information.
The three key objectives of this project are:
- Create alignment amongst the Central East LHIN hospitals and the LHIN around the path for investment required to achieve a hospital technology vision in the next 3 – 10 years.
- Develop a detailed understanding of each hospital’s current plan and the impact of these plans on achieving a common future vision that enables improved patient care.
- Develop a recommendation to the LHIN Board on the best option(s) for a roadmap for future HIS investments.
On October 22, 2014 the Central East LHIN Board, at their Open Board meeting received a Directional Plan entitled “Central East LHIN Shared HIS Vision.” The result of the facilitated integration planning process noted above, this 74-page document was developed over the past six months by hospital leadership, along with clinical, financial and technical experts, to determine a future vision for Hospital Information Systems.
