Sep 23, 2010CENTRAL EAST LHIN BOARD APPROVES INTEGRATION
At its September 22nd open board meeting, the Board of the Central East LHIN issued a decision to support the facilitated integration of hospice services in Northumberland. With this decision, hospice and bereavement services which are now being offered by Palliative Care Campbellford (PCC) and Hospice Northumberland Lakeshore (HNL) will be transferred to Community Care Northumberland (CCN) by December 15, 2010. In addition, LHIN funding that is currently being allocated to PCC and HNL will also be transferred to CCN once the integration is complete.

The partnership between the region’s hospitals that care for patients with kidney disease is growing stronger. Today the three hospitals: Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC), Ross Memorial Hospital (RMH), and Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH), along with the Peterborough site of Dialysis Management Centre Inc. (DMC) and the Peterborough Regional Nephrology Associates (PRNA) have released a new strategic plan.

The Government of Ontario is committed to preventing diabetes and improving diabetes care. The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, as part of the Ontario Diabetes Strategy (ODS), is establishing Centres for Complex Diabetes Care (CCDC) to address the needs of individuals with diabetes who have complex health requirements. A Call for Proposals for CCDCs is now posted on the Stand Up to Diabetes website at: www.ontario.ca/diabetes.

The Central East LHIN, with the support of the Ontario Stroke Network, has designated Lakeridge Health Oshawa as a District Stroke Centre.   Funding received with the designation allows the hospital to hire specialized clinical staff and purchase clot busting drugs, commonly called tPA, that can be quickly administered to minimize the effects of a stroke.

Ontario is providing $23.3 million to support the creation of 873 personal support worker positions in long-term care homes. This will increase the average paid hours of direct daily care per resident to 3.26 hours this year of nursing, personal support and programming.

Chronic kidney disease is on the rise in Canada. In the Greater Toronto Area, it is estimated that end stage renal disease is increasing by 12 percent per year. The Scarborough Regional Dialysis Centre of the Scarborough Hospital is dialyzing over 700 patients and also following 3000 patients with chronic kidney disease.

The Government of Ontario has established the Dr. William Sibbald Award for Excellence in Patient Safety to recognize successful patient safety initiatives.  The late Dr. Sibbald was a pioneer in critical care medicine and a champion of improvements in patient safety system-wide. The Ontario Government is honoured to name this award after him.   The Dr. William Sibbald Award for Excellence in Patient Safety recognizes excellence and innovation in the development and implementation of patient safety initiatives across the health care system.  The $25,000 award will be granted, annually, to an organization or a collaborative.

On August 28th, George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long Term Care, visited a number of seniors centres across the province to launch an Aging at Home Strategy. The goal is to transform community health-care services so that seniors can live healthy, independent lives in their own homes. The Central East LHIN's Seamless Care for Seniors Network Steering Committee played a significant role in the development of this strategy.
