A social worker with a passion for supporting the Aboriginal path to health and healing has joined the Central East Regional Cancer Program at Lakeridge Health. Kathy MacLeod-Beaver is the cancer program’s new Aboriginal Navigator, and she has extensive experience in health promotion and counselling for First Nations Inuit Metis (FNIM) peoples from her work with the Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre in Peterborough and Alderville First Nation Health and Social Services.

Just weeks after stepping into a new role as Executive Director for Central East Regional Specialized Geriatric Services (RSGS), Kelly Kay has been named as one of the first Interdisciplinary Fellows for Technology Evaluation in the Elderly Network (TVN). TVN recently announced eight fellowship awards as part of their mandate to develop multidisciplinary and multi-sector approaches to caring for seriously ill elderly patients, their families and caregivers.

Recognizing that over the next 20 years, the Central East Local Health Integration Network’s (Central East LHIN) senior population is forecast to double, there is an increasing need to expand access to specialized geriatric services outside long term care homes and hospitals, including seniors’ own homes, in retirement homes or Assisted Living in Supportive Housing. Early access to these interventions in the community is critical for delaying or avoiding frail seniors’ need for institutional care.

Two local Community Health Centres - The Youth Centre (TYC) and the Oshawa Community Health Centre (OCHC) – will enter into the next phase of integration planning now that the Board of the Central East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) has endorsed their Directional Plan. The Plan, which was approved by both CHC Boards on July 15th, shows that the organizations agree, in principle, to come together to form a single Community Health Centre.

At its September 22nd open board meeting, the Board of the Central East LHIN issued a decision to support the facilitated integration of hospice services in Northumberland. With this decision, hospice and bereavement services which are now being offered by Palliative Care Campbellford (PCC) and Hospice Northumberland Lakeshore (HNL) will be transferred to Community Care Northumberland (CCN) by December 15, 2010. In addition, LHIN funding that is currently being allocated to PCC and HNL will also be transferred to CCN once the integration is complete.

The Central East LHIN, with the support of the Ontario Stroke Network, has designated Lakeridge Health Oshawa as a District Stroke Centre.   Funding received with the designation allows the hospital to hire specialized clinical staff and purchase clot busting drugs, commonly called tPA, that can be quickly administered to minimize the effects of a stroke.

Chronic kidney disease is on the rise in Canada. In the Greater Toronto Area, it is estimated that end stage renal disease is increasing by 12 percent per year. The Scarborough Regional Dialysis Centre of the Scarborough Hospital is dialyzing over 700 patients and also following 3000 patients with chronic kidney disease.

The Government of Ontario has established the Dr. William Sibbald Award for Excellence in Patient Safety to recognize successful patient safety initiatives.  The late Dr. Sibbald was a pioneer in critical care medicine and a champion of improvements in patient safety system-wide. The Ontario Government is honoured to name this award after him.   The Dr. William Sibbald Award for Excellence in Patient Safety recognizes excellence and innovation in the development and implementation of patient safety initiatives across the health care system.  The $25,000 award will be granted, annually, to an organization or a collaborative.

On August 28th, George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long Term Care, visited a number of seniors centres across the province to launch an Aging at Home Strategy. The goal is to transform community health-care services so that seniors can live healthy, independent lives in their own homes. The Central East LHIN's Seamless Care for Seniors Network Steering Committee played a significant role in the development of this strategy.
