An expert panel has been created to address infrastructure needs as well as improve access and integration of acute health care services in the Scarborough and West Durham region. At the direction of the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, a panel has been struck to develop a plan to address how hospitals in the region can work together to deliver acute health care programs and services in a way that meets the needs of local residents. It will provide recommendations on program and service integration, as well as infrastructure needs.

Scarborough residents will soon have access to a new Palliative Care Community Team, an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals that will provide clinical and non-clinical community based care to palliative and end of life patients.  Mitzie Hunter, MPP for Scarborough Guildwood, was at the Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities today and announced a $360,000 annual investment in this new initiative by the Central East LHIN and the Ontario Government.

The Central East LHIN is pleased to announce that Dr. Ian Dawe, Physician-in-Chief, Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) was appointed to the role of Mental Health and Addictions, Physician Lead for the Central East LHIN earlier this year. Since first accepting the one year appointment, Dr. Dawe has been working with the newly established Central East LHIN Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) Strategic Aim Coordinating Council on the development and implementation of innovative service delivery models that will lead to improvements in child and adolescent hospital based services, opiate and addictions service expansion and the delivery of community crisis services.

At its March 23rd open board meeting, the Board of the Central East LHIN issued a decision to support the facilitated integration of Survivors Psychiatric Advocacy Network (S.P.A.N.) in Lindsay with the Peterborough Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. With this decision, consumer survivor services, previously provided by S.P.A.N. will now be integrated into the services provided through CMHA-Peterborough.

At its September 22nd open board meeting, the Board of the Central East LHIN issued a decision to support the facilitated integration of hospice services in Northumberland. With this decision, hospice and bereavement services which are now being offered by Palliative Care Campbellford (PCC) and Hospice Northumberland Lakeshore (HNL) will be transferred to Community Care Northumberland (CCN) by December 15, 2010. In addition, LHIN funding that is currently being allocated to PCC and HNL will also be transferred to CCN once the integration is complete.

The Central East LHIN, with the support of the Ontario Stroke Network, has designated Lakeridge Health Oshawa as a District Stroke Centre.   Funding received with the designation allows the hospital to hire specialized clinical staff and purchase clot busting drugs, commonly called tPA, that can be quickly administered to minimize the effects of a stroke.

May 29, 2008 Promoting Kidney Health Through Early Screening

Chronic kidney disease is on the rise in Canada. In the Greater Toronto Area, it is estimated that end stage renal disease is increasing by 12 percent per year. The Scarborough Regional Dialysis Centre of the Scarborough Hospital is dialyzing over 700 patients and also following 3000 patients with chronic kidney disease.

Sep 17, 2007 Government establishes award for Excellence in Patient Safety

The Government of Ontario has established the Dr. William Sibbald Award for Excellence in Patient Safety to recognize successful patient safety initiatives.  The late Dr. Sibbald was a pioneer in critical care medicine and a champion of improvements in patient safety system-wide. The Ontario Government is honoured to name this award after him.
 
The Dr. William Sibbald Award for Excellence in Patient Safety recognizes excellence and innovation in the development and implementation of patient safety initiatives across the health care system.  The $25,000 award will be granted, annually, to an organization or a collaborative.

On August 28th, George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long Term Care, visited a number of seniors centres across the province to launch an Aging at Home Strategy. The goal is to transform community health-care services so that seniors can live healthy, independent lives in their own homes. The Central East LHIN's Seamless Care for Seniors Network Steering Committee played a significant role in the development of this strategy.
